Snowflakes are Falling

The new challenge at Alphabet Challenges is "W" for Whatever You Wish.  I still needed another Christmas card, so I decided to use this cute snowman diecut from K & Co.  I found some snowflake stickers and crystals.  I added a little vintage lace and red crepe paper ribbon (which I have had for quite awhile).  Stop by and see what the rest of the design team created.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas!

Find of the Day - Christmas Stickers

I was excited to see an entire display of Jolee's, K & Co. and Martha Stewart Christmas embellishments at TJ Maxx.  I brought several sticker packages home with me for only $1.49 each! These great embellishments will make the best Christmas cards.   Score!

Christmas is Coming!

Today's challenge at Ruby's Rainbow Challenges is Christmas which is my favorite holiday.   I started with glittered cardstock and added patterned paper that I embossed in the Vagabond.  The poinsetta flower sticker is from Jolee's and the bird is from K & Co.  The crown is from a border sticker, but since it was silver I had to whip out the gold stickles and fix it.  Stop by Ruby's and show us your Christmas card creation.

Candy Cane Christmas Card

This month's theme at Sparkles Christmas Challenges is Feasts and Treats. I chose a candy cane made from painted, vintage buttons and pearl gems for my treat.  I added a paper border that I made using a Martha Stewart punch on one side and I used a vintage piece of lace on the other side embellished with red crepe ribbon.  There just wasn't enough sparkle, so added crystals to the crepe ribbon.  I used my CraftRobo to diecut the doily behind the Noel sticker.  I am glad I have been a design team member for Sparkles all year because I have a really nice sart on my Christmas cards.  Di's Digis has graciously agreed to be our sponsor this month.  Stop by and see what everyone creates.

Fussy and Fancy Heart Card

I created this card for the Heart challenge at the Fussy and Fancy blog.  I was a little surprised that I really didn't have much of a heart selection when I checked my embellishments.  I decided to use a small heart diecut from K & Co., but since it was small, I added a vintage crepe paper border which I glittered.  The crepe paper was a great find from the Speckled Egg website.  I added lots of sparkle and some lace and even a little crown made from a border sticker.

Scandinavian Inspired Christmas Card

I created this Christmas card for the Scandinavian Challenge at Vintage Card Cafe.  These ladies have explained the Christmas and New Year's holidays for both Scandinavia and Norway.  It is fascinating reading.  I used a lace patterned wreath for my focal and added a few mistletoe leaves and holly berries.  I used a diamond cut pattern for a background frame that I cut using my CraftRobo.  No card is complete without a little vintage lace (my absolute favorite embellishment) and sparkle.

Recipe Card Challenge

Our newest challenge at Ruby's Rainbow Challenges is a recipe card.  The recipe must contain flowers, pearls and a charm.  I used lace, pearl gems and lots of flowers to embellish my birdcage.  Pop on over to Ruby's Rainbow to see what the rest of the design team created.

I am also entering this card in the Fussy and Fancy design team call.  I would love to be a part of this fun team.  I am kind of an embellishment junkie, so I think I would love working with these girls.  Pop over to the Fussy and Fancy blog to see what they have been creating.

"U" is for Umbrella

Today's challenge at the Alphabet Challenge blog is "U" for umbrella.  I chose a vintage advertisement paper for my background with a vintage postcard umbrella image on top.  I added lace over a Martha Stewart border punch and a crystal frame around the pretty umbrella.  An old fashioned cameo finishes off my card.

This was a big challenge for me, because I had absolutely no umbrella stickers, paper or embellishments.  I am amazed at the beautiful images you can find online.  Hop over to Alphabet Challenges and show us what you create using an umbrella.

Flutterby

Our challenge at Ruby's Rainbow is to create something using pink and blue.  I opted for lots of lace and flowers and a sparkly butterfly.  I started with old fashioned pink and blue paper from a DCWV stack.  I used a Martha Stewart lacy border punch for the bottom and vintage lace and pink rose ribbon for the side.  I added a little pink crystal flourish and topped the card with lots of soft flowers.  I wouldn't normally use these soft colors this time of the year, which is what makes these challenges so much fun.  It is good to be challenged.  Stop by Ruby's Rainbow to see what the rest of the design team created - we want to see yours too!

Halloween Creepiness

I was inspired by Oh My C.R.A.F.T.S. to create mini coffins for Halloween this year.  I found a cutter file for my CraftRobo and the kids and I cut tons of them.  I decorated this one for my mother-in-law.  I added a few stickers and black pom pom trim around the edges.  It was the perfect gift box for a pair of earrings.

This was the creepy card I made for her to go with the coffin.  I found the ticket images on Etsy at Iralamija's shop.  They have tons of vintage image files.  The black lace was perfect.  The bat and creepy bannet stickers are both from Jolees - they make the most detailed designs.

Have a Beary Christmas

This month's challenge at Sparkles Christmas Challenges is to use a bear image on your creation.  I chose an image that was already colored and added a little glitter.  I created the punched border with a Martha Stewart punch and added vintage lace and seam binding ribbon with my tiny attacher.  The garland is from Tim Holtz and the three glittery ornaments are from Jolees.  The winner of this challenge will receive three digital images from Pink Gem Designs

Halloween Card Challenge

The current challenge at Ruby's Rainbow Challenges is Halloween or Halloween colors.  My card is bright and colorful with rhinestones and candy corn ribbon.  The pumpkin sticker is from K & Co. and the BOO pennant sticker is from Jolee's.  I usually make dark, scary Halloween cards, but this one was bright and fun.  Join us at Ruby's Rainbow to see what our design team created.  We would love to see what you make too.

S is for Scary

S is for Scary at Alphabet Challenges this week.  Halloween is just around the corner and I have been using my CraftRobo to cut out lots and lots of bats.  The kids have been hanging them all over the house.  For my scary card, I used a leftover sheet of bat cutouts with a piece of pom pom trim.  I embellished with a few stickers and crystals and voila, a scary card.  Be sure to join us at Alphabet Challenges to see what the rest of the design team created.

Shabby Chic Butterfly

I created this shabby chic style card for a sketch challenge at Cardabilities.  I started with distressed, torn paper from the DCVW Modern Meadow stack and added a punched border.  I used my Martha Stewart fringe scissors to turn a polka-dot fabric circle into a flower.  I added a K & Co. butterfly diecut and lots of flowers with a twine bow and a button.

Vintage Silhouette

My latest card is still inspired by the talented, vintage, shabby chic team at Vintage Card Cafe.  I started with a striped background and added a torn and distressed piece of paper.  I used one of my Martha Stewart punches and added a crystal silhouette sticker to a cintage style bingo game board.  I added a little twine, lace and crystal gems as well as a bird tag tied with a piece of seam binding ribbon.  A cluster of jewels including a cameo finish the card with a vintage flair.

I am entering this card in the following challenges:

Brown Sugar Challenges - Anything Goes
A Simple Five - Anything Goes

Buttons, Buttons, Buttons

It is time for the next challenge at Ruby's Rainbow.  The theme is buttons.  I used lots of vintage, well-worn buttons on this card that I made for my mother-in-law's birthday.  I added torn and distressed paper, a bit of vintage lace from an antique store and lots of pretty flowers.  A distressed doily is peeking out from under the chocolate colored butterfly and I used several pearl gems in antique colors.  The sentiment is a diecut from K & Co.  Be sure and stop by Ruby's Rainbow to see what the other talented design team members created with their buttons.

Shabby Chic Vintage Card

I found a group of vintage style card makers at the Vintage Card Cafe blog.  These ladies have the most beautiful vintage styles.  It requires the Google translator to be able to read their text, but the pictures are amazing.  Their current challenge is to make a shabby chic card in brown and beige tones.  Stop by and see their inspiring creations.

I used lace and crystal stickers, hand dyed vintage seam binding ribbon, vintage lace, a shabby chic flower, a vintage postcard birthday greeting and pearl stickers.  The bird is a K & Co. diecut that I glittered and everything has been Distress inked.

Autumn Leaves

I have wanted the Tattered Leaves cutting die from Tim Holtz for a long time.  I am so excited to finally have it!  I used lots and lots of fall colored papers and my children helped me cut tons of leaves this evening.  Now it is time to create something with them.

Autumnal Colors

Our current challenge at Ruby's Rainbow Challenges is to create a card using turquoise, orange and yellow colors.  I intended to make a brighter card, but the Autumn theme just came together.  I used sparkly pinecone stickers from Jolee's, a collage of leaves and a turquoise colored rhinestone flourish.  I also added a little lace and vintage seam binding ribbon.  Be sure to stop by Ruby's to see what the other design team members created.  We would love to see what you can do with these colors too.

Shabby Chic Birdcage Card

I created this card using colors that I consider to be non-traditional for a bird and a birdcage.  Most of my bird themed creations tend to be blue (maye that's because the Indigo Bunting is my favorite bird).  I love the softness of this card and the shabby chic look that was the result.  I added vintage lace and a little bit of sparkle too.  I am entering this card in the following challenges:

Anything but a Card

The current challenge at Sparkles Christmas Challenges is to make anything except a card.  I always need decorative gift tags for Christmas presents, so I made a few of them.  Tags are a great way to use up scraps and leftovers.  They are all miniature works of art.  Our sponsor for this challenge is Di's Digis.  Be sure to check her out - she has lots of pretty images.

Q is for Quilting

Our current challenge at Alphabet Challenges, is Q is for Quilting.  I used an interpretation of the wedding ring quilt design.  I added fabric flowers that I diecut with the Vagabond.  I continued with the sewing theme by embellishing the flowers with buttons.  I even had a wooden ruler perfect for measuring your fabric.  Please join us at Alphabet Challenges and see what the oher design team members have created.

Team Spirit

The current challenge at Ruby's Rainbow Challenges is to create something with the team spirit theme.  I chose a medallion with ribbons for my centerpiece.  I added lots of sparkly crystals red seam binding ribbon.  The jeweled ribbon in black made just the right ending.  Join us at Ruby's Rainbow and show us your team spirit!

I am also submitting this card in the Anything Goes with Ribbon challenge at Crafty Ribbons.

Simple is Elegant

It has been quite awhile since I have created a card for the challenges in the magazine, 75 Creative Card Challenges.  The sixth challenge is to use nothing but stickers.  No patterned paper layers or additional embellishments were allowed.  This was tough!  I pretty much always start with patterned paper layers on my cardstock.  The result was simple, yet elegant.  On to the next challenge!

It's Time for Ice Cream

The current challenge at Ruby's Rainbow Challenges is Food and Drink.  I found this fun ice cream background paper with a matching sticker.  The ribbon is from the Making Memories Bravissimo line and I love these decorations.  You can add anything to them.  This card needed a little bit of sparkle, so I added lots of crystals.  Join us at Ruby's Rainbow to see what the other talented design team members created.

Vintage Tags

The current challenge at Ruby's Rainbow Challenges is Vintage.  I have chosen vintage elements to create these rustic tags.  I have used vintage lace found at an antique store and hand dyed vintage seam ribbon. The little mushrooms are new, but I tinted them with distress ink and shimmer spray.  I love the burlap paper that I found at JoAnn's.  Stop by Ruby's to see what the rest of the design team members have created and welcome our newest members to the team.

I am entering these tags in the Pile It On No Designer Papers Challenge.

Micro / Mini Elements Card

This is my card for the Alphabet Challenges M for micro / mini or brad challenge.  We had to use little bitty elements on our project.  I chose tiny butterflies for my design.  I added lace (of course) and a couple of leaf pins.  This was a difficult challenge since I discovered that I don't have a lot of mini elements to work with.  Sounds like I need a shopping trip!  Be sure and stop by Alphabet Challenges to see the beautiful work of our other design team members.

Charmed Digi Card

The current challenge at Sparkles Christmas Challenges is to create something with a charm or a brad.  I used a silver teardrop dangling from my bow as my charm.  The snowflakes are holographic and oh so hard to photograph.  The digi is from Pink Gem Designs.  I don;t usually use digis, so this was definitely a challenge for me.  I used my distress markers to color the design.  The white paper background is from my new paper pack that my sister sent for my birthday.  Stop by Sparkles to see the other design team cards - everyone did a great job.

Treasures from an Antique Show

I am so excited!  I found this old printer's tray at the Red Dirt Relics antique show in Joplin this weekend.  I have wanted one forever.  I have run across a few in the past, but they were either too beat up or too expensive.  This one is in perfect condition.  I am still not sure where its permanent home will be, but for now, it is standing on end holding tiny bottles of glitter.  I found other treasures at the show like a spiky vintage frog to hold cards (currently holding my birthday card from my favorite sister), beautiful colors of seam binding ribbon and a stash of sparkly vintage clip earrings which will be repurposed into new bracelets and necklaces.  My mom and daughters had a blast at the show!

Layer It Up Challenge

The latest challenge at Ruby's Rainbow Challenges is layers.  I used several pieces of coordinating paper, all layered with a crystal crown at the top.  The medallion sticker is from K & Co. and I layered it on a spirelli piece that I cut with my CraftRobo cutting machine.  Every layer is inked with distress ink for added depth.  Be sure to come on over to Ruby's and show us your layered creation.  The design team has whipped up some beautiful cards.

Leftover Papers Tag

I love it when you throw some leftovers together and something beautiful appears.  I had a piece of my handmade background paper just sitting on my desk and it just happened to be the perfect size for a tag.  The butterfly label was out as well because it almost went on a different card, but it just didn't work.  I added a couple of pearl flourishes and a leftover piece of ribbon rose trim.  I love how the seam binding looks at the top of the tag.  I am entering my leftover tag in the following challenges:

Creating Your Own Background Papers

I was so inspired after visiting different blogs who are participating in the Where Bloggers Create 2013, that I decided to create some of my own background papers.  Sandra Kaye from Sandra Kaye Designs has made some beautiful, bright papers.  I went for a more antique look, but I like how my papers turned out.  I used masks, spray inks, rubber stamps, markers, and distress paints to create unique background papers for my next cards.  I started by laying the masks on water color paper.  Then I used spray inks in different colors.  Next, I used distress paints mixed with water to create a color wash.  Then I used markers to highlight the stencil design.  On the pink and blue card, I also added a background rubber stamp design.  It was fun to use supplies that I haven't used in awhile.  Here is what I made with them.

I am entering these cards in the Anything Goes challenge at Sister Act Card Challenges.

Here are the background papers that the kids made during their art session this afternoon.

My Creative Space

I am excited to share my creative space with the blog hoppers from My Desert Cottage's Where Bloggers Create 2013.  I have always enjoyed seeing the work zones belonging to other crafters.  Some are spotless and some are fascinatingly busy, but all creative spaces can be inspiring.  I love to see how other crafters organize their tiny embellishments.  Be sure to visit this blog hop's many participants for tons of inspiration.

My space is home to both paper crafts and jewelry making.  My craft room used to be in a bedroom, until about a month ago when I took over the living room.  I would rather have a craft room than a place for the TV.  Besides, there is another TV in the den.   It is great to have a larger space - I feel like I have room to grow (much to my husband's dismay).  I store my papers and card making supplies on bookshelves along the back wall of my space.  My beads and findings are on the side wall.  My work table is just the right size. I love the ceramic tile top because it is a breeze to clean when I smudge distress ink on it. I know I should use my non-stick mat, but sometimes I just don't use it.  A long time ago, my favorite sister gave me a Dymo labeler for my birthday.  I label every drawer and it is a life saver.  I can always find what I am looking for because every drawer is labeled.

The plethora of tiny drawers (115 to be exact) houses all of my beads and findings for jewelry making.  My family has a bead and jewelry store in Joplin, Missouri.  We would love it if you would check out our blog at www.drygulchbeadsandjewelry.blogspot.com.  Our etsy store is the place to go to see our jewelry creations.  I really don't make any jewelry at our store because I keep so busy with the business side of things.  Home is where I get to be creative and I know I am so lucky to have such a fun stash of supplies.

Each type of bead is sorted and stored by color. I have drawers for glass pearls, chinese crystals, semi-precious stones, Swarovskis, lampwork and more. I also have my findings sorted by color and function. I have drawers for beadcaps, filigree, clasps, chain, charms and beads. It is fantastic to be able to find what I need in the middle of a design. I used to have everything in large drawers that I had to sift through. The small drawers are a vast improvement. My favorite drawer is the current projects drawer. I can start a piece and then tuck it away until next time. This way, I never forget what I had planned to put together since everything stays together.

One of my favorite groups of drawers is the vintage findings and old button drawer section.  I have managed to find quite a hoard of vintage parts and pieces like sweater clips, clip earrings and chandelier parts.  The button collection contains shell, metal, carved, lucite and lots more.  A toothbrush comes in handy for making old buttons shine.  It was a bit of a revelation for me when I decided that it was ok to have several drawers with the same label.  If it takes 5 drawers to hold your button collection, then so be it!

My absolute favorite organizer has 6 skinny drawers and 3 tall drawers which came from JoAnn's.  I was unsure about the skinny ones at first since they don't really hold all that much.  I was pleasantly surprised once I filled them because the skinny drawers hold just the right amount so you can easily see your embellishments.  There is no need to dig and I love the compartment organizers within each drawer.  I will definitely have to have another one of these organizers.

I have lots of paper storage in my creative space.  I use these cube shelves from Michaels as well as the bookshelves along the wall.  I store my smaller paper pads, like 6x6 in baskets on a shelf.  These smaller paper pads are sorted according to size which makes them easy to find.   I use clear containers for things like flowers and other embellishments.  I kept some of my larger drawers for larger embellishments like chipboard and rubons.

I recently moved all of my ribbons, laces and trims into a very large drawer organizer.  I used to have every ribbon hanging from the top of a shelf and, quite frankly, it looked like a jungle.  It was easy to find things, but it was out of control.  The drawers work nicely and the ribbons are pretty much sorted.  The lace is all in one drawer.  Now, I need to organize all of my new seam binding ribbons.

In my old craft space, all of my punches were stuffed into a basket on the top of a bookcase.  One thing I have learned is that if you can't see it, you won't use it.  In the new space, I was able to put all of my Martha Stewart punches out in the open.  Surprise, now I use them!  I have 2 Martha Stewart tray organizers that hold little jars of embellishments.  It is so nice to be able to see what I have.

I truly love my creative space.  It is open and spacious and I can work away while still being with my children.  I am convinced that I would never make anything if I was tucked away somewhere in a room by myself.  I need to add some more lighting - I am thinking of a chandelier.  There are always ways to improve any space and I would love to have more shabby chic elements, but I am thankful for my craft room!

Be sure to visit all of the participant's creative spaces.
